Two bypass roads are planned to be built in OMR road, saving the travel time of motorists headed to Mahabalipuram by 30 minutes. The bypass road would be having two stretches, connecting Pudur with Thandalam after passing through OMR between Kelambakkam and Thiruporur.
Of the two bypass roads, one would start at Pudur in OMR and end at Thaiyur Village, covering 4.67 km without entering the Kelambakkam junction. The other road , at 7.45 km, is longer and will be connecting Kalavakkam Village with Thandalam.
Tamil Nadu Road Development Company is planning to start this project ahead of the widening of the Old Mahabalipuram Road into a 6 lane as this is currently stalled by delays in acquiring the required land. This decision was made due to the growing traffic in OMR.
The project is expected to be completed in 2 years from the date of commencement at an estimated cost of Rs.201 Crore.
