Pulicat Day to be Celebrated on February 3rd

The seventh annual Pulicat Day will be celebrated on February 3rd. The World Wetlands Day will be observed as Pulicat Day by AARDE foundation, an NGO that works for the preservation of Pulicat lake. This is an initiative to spread awareness about Pulicat lake, which is India’s second largest brackish water lake.

The Pulicat lagoon, situated towards North of Chennai, has lost more than 315 sq. km. over last 4 decades due to urbanization and its depth has reduced drastically. The unplanned industrial expansion and urbanization have led to the over exploitation of the water basin.

Pulicat Day is observed with an aim to bring back the lost glory of the lagoon, the founder of AARDE foundation told The Times of India.

Catamaran race, heritage walk, kolam and drawing competitions are some of the activities organized as part of the celebrations.
