Porter at Tambaram Railway Station Returns Bag with Rs.5.75 Lakhs to the Owner

A porter at Tambaram Railway Station set an example by returning a bag containing Rs.5.75 lakhs to its owner. He was not only praised for this exemplary display of honesty, but was also rewarded by the Chennai Railway divisional manager Naveen Gulati on Wednesday.

Mr.Poyyamozhi (badge no. 23) who earns a living as a licensed porter in Tambaram Railway Station sighted an abandoned bag on platform number 5 at Tambaram Station at around 3.45 am on November 1, right after the departure of 11064 Salem – Chennai Egmore Express train. He examined the bag and found cash inside. Mr.Poyyamozhi immediately alerted the authorities who in turn alerted the Railway Protection Force.

“RPF lost no time in tracing the passenger on a train nearing Chennai Egmore. Meanwhile, the passenger who lost the bag, after alighting at Chennai Egmore, gave a complaint about his missing bag. And he was immediately alerted that the bag has been traced and the bag was returned to the passenger” Deccan Chronicle reported the railway officials as saying.

The passenger was touched by Mr. Poyyamozhi’s honesty and wanted to reward him with a cash award, but he refused to accept the award.

This is not the first time Mr.Pooyamozhi has turned a saviour. “It is worth recalling that on an earlier occasion the unassuming Poyyamozhi had reunited runaway children with their parents while serving at the station,” The Times of India reported his workmate as saying.
