Located at a 5 hour drive from Chennai, near to Chidambaram, is the world’s second largest Mangrove forest. The beautiful Pichavaram Mangrove Forest covers an area of 1100 hectare and is home to around 177 species of birds.
The dense mangrove forest has around 4,400 canals, some of them still unexplored.
How to get there:
Pichavaram is around 230 km from Chennai. The closest railway station is at Chidambaram, 15 km from Pichavaram. Taxis and buses are available from Chidambaram to Pichavaram.
What to do:
Boat rides through the dense Pichavaram forest are one of a kind experience. Paddle boats and motor boats, operated by the Tamil Nadu tourism department, take passengers through the mangrove forest daily from 9 am to 6 pm.
Best time to Visit:
All through the year. However, it’s best advised to take the boat ride in the morning to escape from harsh sun.
