Phase 1 Extension of The Metro Rail Likely To be Opened on Feb 14

Yes, you read it right. The phase 1 extension of the metro rail project is set to open this week on 14 Feb by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This project that was set to open previously was pushed due to the pandemic. This new rail line will connect Wimco Nagar from Washermenpet.

The metro rail authorities say that though the labour has been doubled for speedy completion, many parts like Theradi, Thiruvottiyur and Tondiarpet still have a substantial amount of work to complete and so the team is planning to push it hard and finish as much as possible before the inauguration.

This consists of an extension of 9.05 km of the existing 23.1 km Blue Line. The connection extended towards North, has eight stations covering from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar. The project also consists of a new elevated depot. The eight stations are as follows:

  • Sir Theagaraya College
  • TondiarpetĀ
  • New Washermenpet
  • Tollgate
  • Kaladipet
  • Thiruvottiyur Theradi
  • Thiruvottiyur
  • Wimco Nagar

The project is jointly funded by the Government of India, Tamil Nadu, and The Japanese International Cooperation Agency. The extended line will soon be open for operations.
