Chennai Metro Rail has started the preliminary work to lay ballastless tracks required for the operation of metro trains in the 9 km phase 1 extension line between Washermenpet and Wimco Nagar. The construction of this metro rail corridor in North Chennai is progressing in full swing.
The upcoming extension line in North Chennai includes a 2 km underground section connected by two stations and a 7 km elevated stretch linked through six stations. With this new line, North Chennai will be connected to various parts of the city by metro rail network.
CMRL is also constructing the elevated maintenance depot at Wimco Nagar. Work for extension line in North Chennai was launched in 2016. Construction of 2 tunnels along the stretch from Washermanpet & Korukkupet was completed towards end of 2017. Work around the construction of elevated corridor is still under way.
