Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) has been ranked as the best engineering institution in the country for the second time consecutively by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Ministry of Human Resource Development, under the overall category introduced this year. Other institutions from Tamil Nadu that made it to the list include Anna University, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirapalli & Vellore Institute of Technology. Anna University made it to top 10, holding eighth position, while NIT, Tiruchirapalli is at 11th position and VIT is at 13th position.
Anna University and Jadavpur University, Kolkata are the only two institutions in the top 10 apart from various IITs. These universities are new entrants to the top 10 list , that was comprised only of IITs last year.
Teaching and learning resources, research, placement and graduation outcome, perception of public and academics and inclusivity of the institution are the factors considered while ranking the institutes.
The launch of an entrepreneurial cell, world’s largest combustion research centre and national cancer tissue bio-bank are some of initiatives undertaken by IIT-M last year.
