CMRL Phase II gets a new extension till Poonamallee

The phase II project of Chennai Metro Rail will include extension of one of its corridors from Valasarawakkam to Poonamallee, covering a stretch of 13 kms with 10 stations, The Hindu reported. This extension from Valasarawakkam to Poonamallee will benefit thousands of people living in the western part of the city.

As per CMRL officials, 10 stations in this new extension will be at Karambakkam, Porur Junction, Sri Ramachandra Hospital, Iyyapanthangal Bus Depot, Kaatupakkam, Kumananchavadi, Karayanchavadi, Mullai Thottam, Poonamallee Bus Terminus and Poonamalle Bypass. This extension will cost nearly Rs.,3,850 crore.

This new extension was added to the phase II program to help commuters living in the western part of the city. The phase II of Chennai metro will cover 108 kms touching upon 116 stations.

The phase II of CMRL will have three corridors — Madhavaram to Shollinganallur, Light House to CMBT and Madhavaram to Siruseri. To accommodate the new extension, Lighthouse corridor plan has been modified. This corridor, instead of touching its destination of CMBT, will take a detour and go all the way up to Poonamallee via Valasarawakkam.
