Chennai’s Second Airport soon to be a reality

Yes, Namma Chennai is all set to welcome a second airport. While the talks are still going on, the state is awaiting a go from the Civil Aviation Ministry. Meanwhile, technical studies are being done to finalize the location for the second airport. While the plan was drawn long back but struggled to make its way, in his recent address, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami mentioned it in the new industrial policy. It is proposed that this new airport will be able to handle around 40 million passengers annually.

A whopping 4500 acres is under study to be finalized for this project in Parandur. Sources say that the TN Industrial Development Corporation is working out preparing reports to check the techno-economic feasibility to obtain various statutory approvals and initiate the bids process.

Meanwhile, on the other hand, the government is also working out to incorporate walk-to-work to reduce the commotion in the city. Under this concept, the government encourages industrial projects to create hostel and accommodation facilities for their employees within a 5 km radius of the workplace. This is good to improve work-life balance and is a great plan to reduce the city’s traffic burden.

The state is also working on developing industrial housing facilities that can accommodate up to 20,000 employees in five industrial parks in Sriperumbudur. Under this, the industry and the workers can rent out the place for the time they work there. As per reports submitted by a high-level committee on TN’s economic state, the housing projects may be created in PPP models.
