Chennai to get 17 km Bicycle Track in a Month

Chennai will be getting a 17 km shared cycle track along Sardar Patel Road, Durgabhai Deshmukh Road and around Island Grounds. The work on this project has already begun by the corporation and is expected to be completed in a month’s time.

Constructed as a means to promote non-motorized transport system, the cycle track will pan along the busy roads of Besant Nagar, Adyar, and Island Grounds.

“There will be signboards for cycles along the road, to sensitise people that it is a shared space for cyclists. We will have reflectors and rumble strips for thesafety of cyclists,” a corporation official told Times of India.

The cycle track is constructed with an aim of providing a safe shared-space for cyclists. The 4 kms out of 17 km cycle track around the Island Grounds, near Napier’s Bridge will be at an elevated level. The remaining 13 km will span over areas like Kasturibai Nagar Second Cross Street, MG Road in Adyar, Besant Avenue Road, Tiru-Vi-Ka Bridge, and parts of Elliot’s Beach and DGS Dinakaran Road in Adyar and Besant Nagar.

Let’s hope these tracks will not be encroached by the vehicles.
