Chennai Metro Phase I tunneling work nearing completion; Goverment to sign agreement for phase II

Chennai Metro Rail phase I continues to proceed at record breaking pace. The longest continuous tunnel drive part of phase I near AGS office – DMS was completed on Tuesday.

The rest of the tunneling work for phase I is getting close to completion. The officials are hopeful of restoring two-way road traffic on Anna Salai in about two to three months as no more road space would be required once the tunnelling gets over, The Hindu reported.

Chennai Metro Rail sources are also hopeful of running the stretch from Saidapet (Airport) to AG-DMS commercially by coming March. The underground train to Chennai Central along the other corridor will be operational by next February. The pending work along the entire stretch including track work, signalling and work on underground stations is expected to take 9 months.

The government is also expecting to sign a loan agreement with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) by next March for Chennai Metro Rail Phase II.
