Chennai Metro patronage doubles after introduction of underground stretch

3 months after Chennai Metro has launched its underground stretch, the average number of people using the service a day has doubled, from 12,000 to 24,000. This is a considerable increase compared to the count of 8,000 – 10,000 when the Metro services started operating in 2015, from Koyambedu to Alandur. The count increased to 12,000 with the opening of second stretch from Little Mount to Chennai Airport.

Nehru park to Chennai Airport, covering 17 km and priced at Rs.60, is the most popular route. Chennai airport, Nehru Park, CMBT, and Thirumangalam are the favourite destinations that saw the maximum number of people travelling through. Vadapalani station, located near a private hospital and Forum Vijaya mall, is the one with highest footfall.

Arumbakkam, Shenoy Nagar, Pachaiyappa’s College, Meenambakkam and Nanganallur Road are the least used stations.
