Chennai Central Station to get a face-lift

The landmark of the city, Chennai Central Station, is all set to get a revamp. The redevelopment comes in the wake of negative reports received for the station in audits and is also triggered by railways’ plan to monetize the land available at the station to provide world class facilities to the passengers.

This change might see many facilities in the station, including food stalls, platform ticketing and parking, getting privatized. The central station receives lakhs of passengers every day and the new amenities planned will improve the quality of service received by them to a very great extent.

Here are the changes proposed :

  • A wider entrance on wall tax road to enable entry and exit of cars coming from North Chennai side through this entrance. This will also give direct access to platforms 1 and 2.
  • New elevator inside the station to help passengers get to the first floor. This facility will be of huge help to senior citizens.
  • Waiting rooms in the first floor.
  • Paid executive lounge facility with air-conditioned lounge and buffet meals.
  • New pay and use toilet
  • Self ticketing counters

The vendor to undertake this project is yet to be finalized.
