A New Line Of Convenience in OMR

While SIPCOT is at the other end of the city, major industrial estates are located here, and people often find it tedious and difficult to commute. While the inter-Chennai and other specific areas of Chennai have a proper and sophisticated commuting facility, there’s hardly any to SIPCOT.

To make travel convenient, CMRL is now holding floating tenders for building a line towards SIPCOT. This line will be 10 km and elevated from Sholinganallur to SIPCOT through Siruseri along the OMR IT Expressway. The work is expected to take around three years. This line will have the following stations:

  • Sholinganallur Lake
  • Sri Ponniamman Temple
  • Sathyabama University
  • St Joseph’s College
  • Semmencheri
  • Gandhi Nagar
  • Navalur
  • Siruseri
  • SIPCOT 1
  • SIPCOT 2

This line will be of great convenience to many employees and college students too. This place has always been jam-packed with vehicles for IT parks and college buses during the pre-COVID times. CMRL wants to initiate the work as early as possible.

However, the priority would be on the Madhavaram-CMBT and Madhavaram-Taramani stretch that will cover 52 km. Phase 2 has 128 stations that run for 118. Km. While it is good news that the new line will be up in few years, there will be a public inconvenience while travelling on this side till then. Unless the traffic is managed in the right way, this cannot be avoided. Once completed, this stretch could turn out to be the busiest one under CMRL.
