PIL Seeking Safety Doors in all Chennai Suburban Trains Filed

A litigation for the protection of public interest (PIL) has been filed in the Madras High Court for a directive to railways to fix safety doors in all coaches of suburban and MRTS trains originating from Chennai. A notice has been issued to the Additional Government Pleader, representing the State government and to the standing counsel for railways, returnable by August 7. The PIL was heard by a division bench of Justices M Venugopal and M Nirmal Kumar on Friday.

The petitioner who filed the PIL contented that railways did not take any action and corrective measures even after six lives were lost at the St Thomas Mount station a few days ago. The petition demands introducing automatic doors, similar to that in Metro rail, in suburban coaches. These safety doors will ensure such tragic incidents are not repeated in future, the New Indian Express reported the petitioner aa saying.
