Chennai Metro coaches to be made in Chennai

Chennai’s Integral Coach Factory is likely to manufacture new coaches for Chennai Metro. The final decision will be made in a meeting on May 24th and railway sources are betting on ICF to seal the deal. So far, all the rakes (each rake has 4 coaches) for CMRL are either being imported or assembled in India.

ICF is already manufacturing coaches for Kolkata Metro Rail and is awaiting orders from Sri Lanka to produce rail coaches through RITES consultancy. Manufacturing costs through ICF is at least 30% lesser when compared to other facilities.

ICF, having supplied 13 rakes with 8 coaches each for Kolkatta Metro, has formed a reputation of excellence in manufacturing fully air-conditioned coaches for Metro Rails. With Chennai Metro moving on to the next phase of its development, it’s an ideal time to turn to local manufacturers who will deliver at a competitive price without compromising on quality.  ICF officials are confident of providing better facilities and sanitation in our railway coaches.

There are also reports of manufacturing of Anubhuti coaches for CMRL with interiors similar to that of aircraft. ICF is also working on thematic coaches with transparent glasses to cater to the tourism sector.

Well, we can’t wait for namma metro to be made in Chennai and with that hopefully, the metro fares will go down too.
